You might spend more time driving to get there than on the trail, but Flatside Pinnacle is worth the ride. At about 3/4 of a mile, the trail is narrow and rocky, slightly steep, but not overly strenuous— a great trail for just about all ages and abilities. Flatside Pinnacle is just off the 200-mile Ouachita Trail, so you may meet some backpackers hiking through. And the cliffs that give the trail-end its beautiful vistas sometimes entertain rock climbers. On a clear day, views reveal Pinnacle Mountain some 30 miles east, and Forked Mountain 8-10 miles to the west.
The trailhead is about an hour and a quarter from downtown Little Rock off Highway 10 (or 9, depending on your route). Turning off Highway 10 (or 9), expect 6-8 miles of sometimes rough but well maintained gravel and dirt road. The trailhead is marked, and features parking for several cars. Some of the route is out of cell service, so you’d be wise to download directions from your favorite wayfaring site first. You should have service on top of the peak, though.
After following Highway 10 to the Lake Sylvia turnoff, turn on to country road 805 to start the drive to Flatside Pinnacle.
You will cross Ouachita Trail twice before you get to the parking area and trailhead.
