Having been born and raised in the outskirts of Hot Springs, I have always considered “The Gorge” and its surrounding trails uniquely beautiful. Gulpha Gorge Trail, especially this time of year, evokes a certain nostalgia and stimulates my senses with its vibrant foliage and rustling wildlife.
Before reaching the trailhead (located across the creek from the amphitheater of Gulpha Gorge Campground) I always enjoy snapping a few pictures in front of the nearby bridge, with the shallow creek water shimmering in the background. The stepping stones that stretch across the water create a nice spot for photos.
This trail is a short 0.8 mile journey that will lead you from the scenic Gulpha Gorge Campground to a charming stone shelter located just off of Hot Springs Mountain Drive. Though shaded by coniferous pines and hardwoods, the first half of the trail presents a bit of a challenge due to its steep incline. (The elevation change along this trail is 383 feet.) Luckily, the concrete bench located at the first intersection offers a nice place to pause and catch your breath.
As for hiking apparel needed to complete this trail, I usually wear sturdy hiking boots or tennis shoes, especially since there is some loose gravel along the path.
Gulpha Gorge Trail is known for its close proximity to the historic Hot Springs area, with plenty of restaurant options nearby (less than 5 miles up Hwy 70). One of my personal favorites is Picante’s, which is a Mexican restaurant inside Spencer’s Corner downtown. If you prefer to just pick up a few snacks, Dodge’s gas station is a few miles away from Gulpha Gorge on Grand Avenue.
We have friends in Northwest Arkansas who have made the 3 ½ hour drive to visit this trail. This location is also ideal for those visiting from Central Arkansas, as the trail is about an hour from Little Rock. Regardless of how far you are traveling, Gulpha Gorge Trail is worth the trip.
