Rattlesnake Ridge Natural Area is a 400 acre preserve minutes from the heart of downtown Little Rock with several miles of multi-purpose trails for hikers and bikers of all skill and experience levels. Just off Highway 10 (Cantrell Road), this family-friendly space protects unique flora and fauna like the southeastern bat (Myotis austroriparius), Wright’s cliffbrake fern (Pellaea wrightiana), and Arkansas Twistflower (Streptanthus maculatus subsp. obtusifolius). It also marks the eastern-most habitat of the western diamondback (Crotalus atrox). Sightings are rare, though, so don’t let that keep you away.
The actual ridge which gives the area its name features awe-inspiring views of Lake Maumelle to the north, Pinnacle Mountain to the east, and Shinall Mountain to the south. Rising more than 900 feet above sea level and some 500+ feet above the parking area/trailhead, the ridge can be traversed on a 3/4 mile trail. While that trail is relatively level, it IS strenuous and challenging due to the rocky terrain. There are numerous other, easier trails starting from the parking lot/trailhead. These loops range from 1-2 miles, and can be connected and extended for a full morning or afternoon of hiking. If you want to get to the ridge, expect about a 30-minute hike, and then another 30-45 minutes to traverse it and begin your descent.
Since its opening in Spring, 2018, Rattlesnake Ridge has quickly become a favorite of Little Rock outdoors enthusiasts due to its easy accessibility, wide range of terrain and trails, and ample outdoor sport offerings. It’s close enough to the city to get in a quick hike, bike or climb before or after work, and then grab a meal or a craft beer at a local brewery afterwards. Enjoy!
