Tucked away in the heart of West Little Rock’s Ranch neighborhood is a little-known hidden jewel – the William Kirsch Preserve within Ranch North Woods. This short trail – approximately 1.8 miles – is an easy and beautiful trek, and appropriate for the whole family.
The trail is part of a 230-acre wildlife sanctuary and is appropriate for walkers, runners, bikers. and nature watchers. Leashed pets are also welcome; the Preserve just asks that you clean up any messes.
The trail is divided into four parts: gravel, woods, river, and field, which make a full loop around and you can choose which direction you want to go. The .25-mile gravel trail, surrounded by tall fields of grass and wildflowers is first. From there you can head straight into the woods or head west (left) along the field trail.
The wooded trail is .37 peaceful miles heading North through well spread out hardwoods and pines toward the Little Maumelle River. Then the forest trail connects to the River Trail, which heads west another .75 miles with glimpses of the river to the north. Both trails are easy to follow with regularly-marked signs on trees heading both directions. While there are a few places to watch your step, there is very little change in elevation, making it an easy and enjoyable hike for most.
At the end of the river trail is an open, well-maintained field area, complete with picnic tables and a fire pit. This is where you can really get a good look at the wetlands, as well as take some gorgeous photos. There is a dock for fishing, and even a nice canoe and life jackets that is free to take out on the river.
The final section of trail is .42 miles among tall grass and wildflowers, with beautiful views of Pinnacle Mountain to the west. While the trail is mowed, it is not well marked like the forest/river trail and there are a few extra mowed areas that make this section a little confusing.
Overall, the trail offers a gorgeous, easy, and not-too-crowded outing.
